Essential Reading - Our Top Picks for March

Each month, our Moore Stephens L&D team brings you its top picks for essential business reading. This month, we look at two books that look at the vagaries of business success, and how to maximise business growth.

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don't (Jim Collins)

A bestseller, with over 10 million copies sold worldwide and going far beyond the traditional audience of business books, this is an ageless and staple business read. Jim Collins writes about how companies transition from being good companies to great companies, and how (and why) most companies fail to make the transition. He does this by exploring a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results (generating cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the world's greatest companies) and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. It is an easily digestible read, full of useful titbits – both inspirational and instructional.

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (Malcolm Gladwell)

The Tipping Point explores why some ideas, products and behaviours experience explosive growth, while others die on the vine. Gladwell demonstrates how growth depends on reaching an epidemic-like moment known as the ‘tipping point.’ And while many factors can contribute to a concept growing exponentially, most of the time it only takes a few key people to trigger an epidemic. Gladwell is a great storyteller and he knows how to keep the reader involved – an intriguing and fascinating read.

Happy reading!
