Essential Reading – Books to Read This Summer

With the holidays on the horizon, hopefully we’ll all have a little more time to catch up on some inspiring reading.  In the words of Henry David Thoreau “Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all.”

Our Learning & Development team share the two books they recommend for essential summer reading.

Steinheist: Markus Jooste, Steinhoff & SA's biggest corporate fraud (Rob Rose)

The Steinhoff crash wiped more than R200bn off the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, erased more than half the wealth of tycoon Christo Wiese and knocked the pension funds of millions of ordinary South Africans. When this investors’ darling was exposed as a house of cards, tales of fraudulent accounting, a lavish lifestyle involving multimillion-rand racehorses and ructions in the ‘Stellenbosch mafia’ made headlines around the world.

Rob Rose reveals the real inside story behind Steinhoff, based on dozens of interviews with key players in South Africa, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands – and documents not yet public. Having had the privilege to hear some of the story behind this book from Rob Rose himself at the annual Moore Stephens South Africa Partners’ conference this year, we recommend this as a riveting local read!

Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike (Phil Knight)

Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight shares the inside story of the company’s early days as an intrepid start-up and its evolution into one of the world’s most iconic, game-changing, and profitable brands.  Knight shares the personal, honest, vulnerable side of building an empire.

This memoir is rich with insight, humour and hard-won wisdom, and it is studded with lessons – about building something from scratch, overcoming adversity, and ultimately leaving your mark on the world.  An inspirational book that you will remember for years after reading it – a definite bucket list book!

Happy reading!
