World Health Day is an annual event that marks a time of reflection and awareness surrounding global health issues while creating actionable steps to focus on health and wellbeing, both in and out of the workplace.
How we can get involved in the World Health Day initiative, the Moore Way:
- Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures
How can the theme contextualise into the workplace? We, as organisations, can prioritise providing a supportive environment for new mothers and families. Some ways we can do this include implementing maternity and paternity policies that exceed legislative requirements, providing postpartum support and awareness for those who may be struggling with post-partum anxiety/depression, as well as the provision of educational resources to new mothers and fathers.
- Normalise Mental Health Conversations
Encourage managers and employees to have regular and open discussions surrounding mental health, raising awareness of the importance of providing mental and emotional support within the workplace as well as providing access to mental health management resources, such as the South African Depression and Anxiety Group - https://www.sadag.org/.
- Encourage Healthy Habits
Healthy habits can be formed both in and out of the workplace, providing awareness and action to making healthier choices is vital not only for physical health, but mental health too. Incorporating wellness initiatives (e.g. workplace walks, health checks, wellness talks) through tailored Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), and providing accessible online resources that address topics such as stress management, nutrition and exercise are all a great place to start to kickstart a healthier & more productive workforce.
- CSR Health Initiatives
Corporate Social Responsibility is a way that employees and organisations can give back to communities and can drive employee engagement and sense of purpose. Ways to give back to the community for World Health Day can include implementing organisation-wide blood drives with SANBS, organise charity events for causes that promote health in local communities, as well as spending time volunteering/donating to local healthcare providers.
Let’s ensure that the awareness surrounding World Health Day becomes a continuous catalyst within our workplaces, instilling positive change and driving a healthier and happier Moore workforce!
